Try this Viral Strawberry Treat with a Twist

Posted By RCI, Tuesday, August 6, 2024
Updated: Thursday, September 26, 2024

For many candy makers, selling chocolate-covered strawberries in the summer heat might sound like a recipe for disaster. However, thanks to a viral idea from a produce market in London, this seemingly crazy idea is worth a second look--especially for late summer and fall events, including outdoor gatherings.

The viral concept simply involves a cup of fresh strawberries covered with melted chocolate. Click here to see how RCI member Zak & Mac’s Chocolate Haus does it. The appeal of these chocolate-covered strawberries lies in their simplicity. If you’re a chocolatier, you already have melted chocolate and likely a good source for fresh strawberries, if you make chocolate-covered strawberries for holidays.

For a creative spin, consider a strawberry shortcake-inspired version. Drench strawberries in white and milk chocolate and sprinkle with crushed shortcake cookies for a nostalgic twist. Alternatively, a cookies and cream variation, where the strawberries are covered in a mix of white chocolate and crushed Oreo cookies, will satisfy any cookie lover’s craving. For a campfire classic, try a s’mores version by mixing strawberries with milk chocolate, mini marshmallows and graham cracker crumbs.

Don’t limit yourself to strawberries. Adding a mix of fresh pineapple, blueberries, and grapes will work beautifully with this technique. Pineapple can be drizzled with white chocolate and toasted coconut, and grapes can be covered in a dark chocolate with a hint of sea salt.

Incorporating these variations not only keeps your offerings fresh and exciting but also helps your business stand out in a competitive market. Embrace this viral trend and let your creativity shine with these deliciously cool treats. This simple yet delicious idea has become a favorite because it’s so versatile and easy to prepare. Sometimes, the best ideas are the simplest ones, and these chocolate-covered strawberries are a perfect example of that.

A Simple Solution for Offering Custom Easter Baskets

Posted By RCI, Tuesday, February 28, 2023
Updated: Tuesday, September 5, 2023

As Easter approaches, candy shops can soon expect shoppers looking to build custom Easter baskets for loved ones. For some, creating and selling custom Easter baskets can be a time-consuming process that requires detailed staff training and complicated pricing structures.

This week we’re sharing a simple solution from RCI member, Juliet Chocolate Factory, that can save candy shops time and effort while still offering customers the opportunity to create custom Easter baskets.

Pictured: Juliet Chocolate Factory shared their idea for "Load & Go" Custom Easter Baskets at Candy Clinic during RCI's 2022 Annual Convention & Industry Expo.

Near the register at Juliet Chocolate Factory in Romeo, Michigan customers can take their pick from a selection of pre-assembled Easter baskets—three different sizes of themed baskets serve as the base. Each basket is filled with paper shreds and a coordinating bow (with tie) which is packaged inside a clear cello bag that is closed with a twist tie.

The baskets are empty, representing a blank canvas of sorts for customers to shop your store for the perfect mix to fit the intended recipient. Once shoppers are done selecting the contents of their custom Easter baskets, staff at the register can simply stuff the basket while ringing up each individual item, along with the gift basket, itself, which has its own product code/price.

This approach to offering custom Easter baskets can help you save time and effort this Easter. It’s a win-win solution that allows candy shops to focus on delivering quality products and excellent customer service while still providing customers with the opportunity to create their own unique Easter baskets.

Fresh Squeezed Inspiration: Lemon Confections 4 Ways

Posted By RCI, Tuesday, March 29, 2022
Updated: Wednesday, April 13, 2022

A quintessential spring and summer flavor, lemon and other citrus fruits are experiencing increased popularity as a source of immune-boosting vitamin C. As the temperature heats up, give your product lineup a refresh with these fresh-squeezed lemon confections.

Lemon Twist Bark

Made with a layer of dark chocolate, topped with lemon white chocolate, then sprinkled with crushed lemon candies and lemon-twist sea salt. A drizzle of dark chocolate is the finishing touch to this sweet, salty and sour bark from Olympian Candies.

Lemon Buttercream

Take it from RCI member Winans Chocolates + Coffees of Piqua, Ohio and add your favorite lemon flavor for a fresh spin on your traditional buttercream recipe. To create even more interest, Winans named the product "Cioccolato de Limone." Bellissimo!

Lemon Blueberry Caramel

Lemon and caramel may not be the most expected flavor combinations, but after Walker’s Chocolates of Burlington, Ontario won best new piece at Candy Clinic in 2015 for their Lemon Blueberry Caramel, we’d say it’s a winner! The flavor is achieved by adding lemon oil and dried blueberries to their caramel recipe.

Lemoncello Chocolate Almonds®
Inspired by the Italian liqueur, this popular panned treat combines roasted almonds with a coating of white chocolate and lemon cream. Although this product is available for private label from Sconza Chocolates, you can achieve your own lemoncello-inspired treats by adding a hint of vanilla to an existing lemon-flavored confection.

Loyal customers can be your most powerful sales tool. Launching new products that capture customers’ interest and attention is a great way to remain relevant and encourage customers to promote your business through word of mouth. Promoting your new products on social media makes it easy for your followers to share your content within their circles.

2 Ways to Spread Kindness this Spring

Posted By RCI, Tuesday, March 1, 2022
Updated: Wednesday, April 13, 2022

Even in the midst of a global pandemic, people found ways to spread joy and lift up their neighbors through acts of kindness. Even the smallest gestures made a big impact to those affected the most.

In many cases things seem to moving in a positive direction, yet, there are still many industries and individuals experiencing new or continued challenges with staffing and material shortages, burnout and etc.

With the arrival of spring this month and Easter around the corner, consider ways to create opportunities for members of your community to show kindness to others. Here’s some examples of ways RCI members are helping spreading joy through sweetness for you to use as inspiration.

Easter Basket Giveaway for Senior Citizens

For Easter of 2020, O’Shea’s Candies hosted an Easter basket giveaway for senior citizens living in nursing homes. Social media followers were invited to post the name of someone at a nursing home who would enjoy an Easter basket from O’Shea’s. Five winners were chosen at random and baskets of treats were delivered or shipped directly to the winners’ nursing homes across the United States.

You’re never too old for an Easter basket! This sweet contest is a way to give some much-deserved love to the elderly in your community.

Flower Power Artwork Exchange

In exchange for hand-drawn artwork by area youth, Aigner Chocolates offered free chocolate lollipops. In 2020, Aigner requested drawings of rainbows to cheer up front-line workers at their local hospital. This year, they tasked local kids and schools to draw colorful flowers for children and staff in the pediatric units at two local hospitals. Resulting in just over 1,500 drawings (more than double their goal), there’s no doubt the campaign made a significant impact to all the participants. Their efforts were so successful, Aigner Chocolates was highlighted on national ABC News. Click here to view the news story.

The success of a campaign like this relies on good word of mouth. Take advantage of all the channels available to your business to help spread the word. This may include social media, e-newsletter, in-store signage, press releases to your local media, etc. If your campaign involves kids, share your initiative with your local schools and ask them to help spread the word. If you team up with a hospital, like Aigner Chocolates did, they too may be able to spread the word.

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.”

-       - Mother Teresa

With so many people in need of a little extra love and care, in addition to those with crucial roles in our community experiencing burnout due to continued challenges caused by the pandemic, consider what role your business can play to lift up your community and make its members feel appreciated and cared for.

Increase Easter Sales: Host a Peep-Pop Event

Posted By RCI, Tuesday, March 23, 2021
Updated: Friday, August 20, 2021

After shutting down their manufacturing facility due to COVID-19, Peeps are back just in time for Easter (learn more)! This week we're sharing one way to celebrate the return of this iconic confection.

In 2019, RCI member Dolle’s Candyland, Inc. in Ocean City, Maryland shared a clever Easter idea that is too good not to share. Although many businesses are still wrestling with COVID-19 limitations, in some areas restrictions have let up substantially. While we still encourage practicing caution with regards to the virus, we are hopeful some businesses will be able to incorporate the elements of a Peep Pop event whether it be as a virtual event, an outdoor event or with participation limits.

When Dolle’s Candyland made plans to open a fourth retail store, they wanted to incorporate space where kids could enjoy hands-on candy-making experiences. For Easter 2019, Dolle’s used that space to create an event for families to bring their kids and make an “Easter Bunny Peep Pop” in their store.

After creating a public event on Facebook to spread the word, they were surprised to see people lined up out the door to make chocolate-covered Peeps. “I didn’t know that I would need stanchions [to direct the crowd],” Anna Dolle Bushnell explained, “I think we [as candy makers] take for granted what we do—people really love candy. It’s such a great thing to give them an experience like this, that really is very minimal.”

Peep Pop Procedure

Dolle's shares their "recipe" for creating a successful Easter Peep Pop event with these five easy-to-follow steps:

#1: Distribute hand wipes and have children roll up their sleeves.

Dolle's team was prepared with a large container of hand wipes, purchased from Amazon to make hand-washing a breeze while kiddos waited in line.

#2: Write child’s name on the bottom of a paper plate.

This step allows for you to hold the peep “hostage” (you’ll learn why on step #4) while it cools.

#3: Let each child dip Peep Pop in chocolate, place it on a plate and add a mini marshmallow “tail.”

This is where it’s important to keep steps to a minimum—little to no decorations are necessary. Having hosted a similar event previously, Dolle's has learned the value of keeping it simple, “if you leave sprinkles out, the kids will want to use all the sprinkles,” noted Anna. Another important tip, make sure to have a step-stool for the smaller children.

#4: Hold the Peep Hostage

This is step was emphasized by Dolle's for good reason, “Instead of walking around the store with a wet, chocolate Peep Pop, we put it through the enrober line until the Peep Pop was set up.” Adding that placing the pops in front of a fan or in the refrigerator would be suitable alternatives for anyone who doesn’t have an enrober.

The key to this step, and the overall success of this event, is while the chocolate cooled, participating families had about ten minutes to shop in their retail store.

#5: After Peep Pop is set, announce child's name in shop.

When ready, a member of the Dolle's team would read the name on the bottom of each plate before presenting the child with their finished Peep Pop. “Most of the kids would gobble it right up, but some did take them home,” Anna noted. “Some of them were beautiful, while some of them would end up having a whole pool of chocolate.”

The Conclusion

Due to the buzz created by this free, one-day event, Dolle’s Candyland increased their sales by 150% more than the day before. “People were just so thankful that we did it and some adults did it too,” added Anna. If restrictions in your area prevent your store from hosting an event, consider boxing up the ingredients and supplies for customers to make Peep Pops at home. Wishing you a “hoppy” Easter!

Catch a Leprechaun with Sweet St. Patrick’s Day Treats

Posted By RCI, Tuesday, February 23, 2021
Updated: Friday, August 20, 2021

Try your luck this St. Patrick’s Day with treats so tempting, you might just lure a leprechaun into your candy shop…along with new and returning customers too!

Blarney Bark

What leprechaun could resist a bite of “Blarney Bark” from RCI member, Reid Candy & Nut Shop, of Cambridge, Ontario. These festive treats are made with green compound coating and bits of rainbow stripe candy, colorful candies and clover sprinkles.

Irish Potato Candy

A popular St. Patrick’s Day treat, Irish potato candy was neither invented in Ireland nor does it typically contain potatoes. RCI member, Dolle’s Candyland of Ocean City, Maryland makes their Irish potatoes extra decadent by coating coconut cream in rich, dark chocolate before rolling them in a blend of cocoa and cinnamon. Milwaukee-based RCI member, Burke Candy & Ingredients combines shoestring potato sticks with their coconut dough before rolling their version of Irish potatoes in cinnamon and sugar.

Pot of Gold Truffles

Transform your existing truffle or meltaway recipe into pots of gold fit for teams of leprechauns. Create the flat top of the “pot” by flattening or trimming one side of the round center before coating it in chocolate. Once set, pipe chocolate onto the flat top of the pot and use it to adhere rainbow candy and gold sprinkles.

Leprechaun Cookies

These leprechaun cookies are so clever, they’re likely to leap right off your shelves and into customers’ shopping baskets. With a little green and orange confectioners coating, some candy eyeballs and a pinch of finesse with the piping bag you’ll have yourself an army of jolly good leprechauns.

Chocolate-Covered Pickles

If you dip it, they will come. This salty and sweet combination is just bizarre enough it is sure to catch the attention of the more adventurous consumers looking to try something new. Malley’s Chocolates of Cleveland has had success (and garnered plenty of media attention) over the years coating dill pickles in chocolate exclusively for St. Patrick’s Day.

Anyone who receives treats like these is sure to count themselves lucky this St. Patrick’s Day! Share your favorite St. Patrick’s Day treat in the comments below.

Updated: Tuesday, May 5, 2020

Welcome the arrival of spring by celebrating the sweet traditions of May Day! May 1 has been long recognized by cultures around the world, marking the return of spring and symbolized by bright colors and fresh flowers.

3 Sweet Ways to Celebrate May Day

May Day Baskets
During the 19th and 20th centuries, May Day baskets were made of paper and filled with flowers, candies and other treats to be hung on the doors of friends, neighbors and loved ones on May first. The tradition was to knock on the door, shout “May basket,” and then run (nationaltoday.com)—while we are still practicing social distancing, we can't think of a better way to connect with loved ones and friends.

May Day is a great opportunity to encourage customers to creatively gift your confections. Below is inspiration to create your own sweet May Day baskets. Click here to download a cute, printable May Day Basket template. The blog, Skip to My Lou, has shared loads of simple ideas for making your own May Day baskets.

Candy Bouquets
May Day is often represented by bouquets of fresh flowers, but with a few supplies you could make paper flowers featuring your confections. If you have individually wrapped candies, like foil-wrapped truffles or caramels or taffy wrapped in wax paper, put your own sweet spin on this Candy Bouquet by It’s Always Autumn. All you need is crepe paper (or tissue paper), a hot glue gun and sucker sticks.

Maypole Dance

Although the origin of the maypole is unknown, this tradition is thought to date back to medieval times when people would dance around trees with bright ribbons as a way to welcome good crops (nationaltoday.com).

Invite your social media followers to submit fun photos or videos of their home crew doing their own Maypole dances for a chance to win free treats in return for the ensuing smiles and laughs.

This age-old tradition of celebrating the new life, nature's bounty and the sweet surprises it can bring may be just what people need to warm their hearts and put a smile on their faces.
