Bomboy's Candy has been in operation since the spring of 1978. Their chocolates are made fresh daily from recipes handed down through the Bomboy family. Both the founder's children, Charlie and Kathy, now work full-time in the company. Across the street from their candy store, Bomboy's manufactures their own hard ice cream.
Independent Can Company
Founded in 1929, Independent Can Company is a world leader in the manufacturing of specialty metal packaging and metal lithography. Operations started in downtown Baltimore in a 4 story building making pails for lard and cans for seafood, and now have 4 plant locations across the US manufacturing a variety of specialty packages and products.
Louis J. Rheb
In 1917 Louis and Esther Rheb started making candy in their basement. Taffies, brittles, fudge and jellies were the first candies Louis learned to make. In the mid 1930's, they opened a stall in a local market and in 1950 converted their garage into a store; it is still the main store today and the Rheb family is now into their fourth generation of candy making.
Now in its fifth generation of candy making, Wockenfuss Candies will be celebrating 100 years in business in 2015. The business began with Herman Charles Wockenfuss immigrating to America from West Prussia, Germany. Now, with four generations currently involved in the business, it includes eight retail stores in Maryland and a growing internet business.
The Capital Candy Jar
Started in April 2014 by David Burton, The Capital Candy Jar operates out of Union Kitchen, a food incubator designed to help food start-up businesses get off the ground by providing production equipment and resources. Over 50 food start-up businesses operate out of Union Kitchen. We will see how multiple food start-ups interact and share space and equipment at the facility.
NCA Policy Update
Allied confectionery association, National Confectioners Association, will join us for lunch in Washington DC to share an update on public policies as they relate to retail confectioners.
A bean-to-bar chocolate company, SPAGnVOLA owns their own cacao farm in the Dominican Republic. Through their work they are aiming to not only make great chocolates but to create greater opportunities for cacao farmers throughout the world. We will tour the entire bean-to-bar process and will hear from CEO, Eric Reid, about cacao genetics and flavor profile.
Guided tours begin at one of the Capitol Visitor Center's orientation theaters with a film taking visitors on a journey through the U.S.'s struggle to establish the world's first truly representative democracy. Once inside the historic Capitol, visitors will see the Crypt, the Rotunda and National Statuary Hall.
Founded in 1910 by father and son, Rudolph and Rudolph Dolle, Dolle's Candyland has expanded products beyond its original salt water taffy line to include caramels, caramel popcorn, chocolates, fudge and brittles, all manufactured at the facilities on the boardwalk of Ocean City. Now owned and operated by the grandchildren of the original founders, Dolle's continues to grow.
Dumser's Dairyland has been a part of the history of the Ocean City Boardwalk since 1939 when Mrs. Gladys Dumser started the business selling its famous ice cream treats in stores along the ocean. She sold the business in 1980 to Don Timmons. Since that time, the company has grown to include three boardwalk ice cream stores and two restaurants.
Life-Saving Station Museum
Learn about the history of the U.S. Life Saving Service, the predecessor of today's Coast Guard, through a tour of Ocean City's Life-Saving Station Museum. The museum is dedicated to collecting and preserving the history of life-saving on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.
U.S. Naval Academy
The Naval Academy has been training officers for the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps since 1845. Attendees will have the opportunity to take a guided historical tour of the U.S. Naval Academy. The tour highlights life at the academy past and present. Attendees will get to visit the Crypt of John Paul Johns, Revolutionary War Hero, as well as other notable monuments and courts.
